A conversation with Anouck Mutsaerts

At Dou so, we are endlessly inspired by people who approach creativity with curiosity and playfulness, those who understand that the most meaningful work often lives in the quiet details of everyday life.
Anouck Mutsaerts is one of those people.
Through her work as a creative director and stylist, she creates images and worlds that feel instinctive, playful, and deeply considered, where color, humor, and subtlety all exist in balance.
We spoke with Anouck about her path into styling, the role of travel in shaping her perspective, what she’s had to unlearn along the way, and the small things that continue to bring her joy.
Based in Geneva, Anouck Mutsaerts is a creative director and stylist whose work is rooted in intuition and visual storytelling. Originally drawn to writing and journalism, her practice has evolved into a more visual language, one that translates narrative through color, composition, and feeling.

How do you introduce yourself to someone who has never seen your work?

Hi, I’m Anouck — a creative director and stylist. :)

I’ve always been drawn to narratives, first through writing — which led me to study journalism.
Today, those same narratives take on color and form. Things began to align when I moved to Paris in 2015 and started working in styling.
Was there a moment where things shifted for you, creatively or personally?

Moving back to Geneva from Paris felt uncertain at first — I thought I might be stepping away from creativity.
In the end, it’s exactly where everything fell into place.

Color.
Do you think your work is a reflection of the world, or a way of escaping it?

Neither, really.
It’s a reflection of my own creativity — and whatever happens to inspire me.

I’m constantly inspired by art — my husband and many of my friends work in that world.
Being surrounded by beauty is a privilege. That said, it’s an intense industry — highly competitive, and not always easy to navigate.

Overthinking.

The people I’ve met, the places I’ve seen, and the collaborations I’ve been lucky enough to be part of.

A sense of humor. And a sense of fun!

Subtlety.
The quiet details. The almost invisible things that, in the end, shape everything.
How has travel shaped your way of seeing and creating? What is a place you would return to again and again, anywhere in the world?

Travel has always been essential to me — it constantly feeds my creativity.
There’s something about meeting people elsewhere, discovering different ways of living and making, that gently expands your perspective in the most beautiful way. It influences how I see, how I think, and ultimately how I create.
My forever favorite place is Île de Ré in France — my husband grew up there, and we’ve been going ever since we met.
It’s peaceful, beautiful, and quietly inspiring — with, arguably, the best bicycle paths. We would love to live there.

We launched it two years ago, and seeing it grow is incredibly exciting.

Trust your path — and create your own opportunities.

My collection of vases.
I have around fifty, and I love choosing the perfect one for each bouquet.
An instinct we deeply understand, the idea that objects aren’t just objects, but part of a ritual, a composition, a moment.

Ending the day with Modern Family in bed.

Magic is everywhere.
It’s in the small things — noticing them, and choosing to appreciate them.
not something you find, but something you decide to see.

We love the way Anouck sees the world, she doesn’t try to overdefine or overexplain, but instead leaves space for instinct, curiosity, and play.
Her work is a reflection of that: thoughtful but light, precise yet effortless, rooted in a way of noticing that feels both personal and universal.
A reminder that creativity doesn’t always need to be loud to be meaningful, sometimes, it lives in color, in subtlety, and in the small moments we choose to pay attention to.
